Where to find the best comfort food this winter

As the winter months set in so do the cravings for hearty, warming comfort food, preferably enjoyed by a fire or cosy setting, with a free bottle of wine by your side. Food is good for the soul, which is why we’re encouraging you to give in to your cravings with our list of the best spots to find comfort food this winter that also comes with a free bottle of wine.

Sydney - Alegrias Spanish Tapas
From the street, Alegrias appears unassuming, but venture off the main drag in Balmain, Sydney and you’ll find a special space reminiscent of a beautiful old church. Boasting high ceilings, chandeliers, a hardwood fireplace and historical charm, it’s a great space to settle in on a cold winter’s night with a free bottle of wine. And if you’re visiting on the weekend, flamenco dancers and live musicians really heat things up. The Spanish have a knack for creating dishes that warm you from the inside out. For all the creature comforts start with salamanca chorizo served with crusty bread to mop up the oils, and then you can’t go past a traditional paella packed full with meat, fresh seafood or even a mix of both.

Melbourne - Massi
When a restaurant is offering a Nonna style feed me menu you know you’re on to a good thing. Built on Sicilian roots, Massi in Melbourne’s CBD is serving up traditional Italian dishes that are simple in design but certainly not in flavour. With a menu that changes with the seasons, you’ll be spoilt for choice for warming winter dishes. The pappardelle with braised osso buco and tomato ragu hits the brief on the head, second only to a warm hug from the aforementioned Nonna herself. Equally, agnolotti del plin pasta with brown butter, broccolini and truffle is the kind of rich and smooth flavour you want when escaping the cold. Even the antipastini list boasts a few more sizeable options than the usual cold meats and breads, like warm roasted cauliflower and raisins with kale and pepita pesto. As a Citi cardholder you’re entitled to a free bottle of wine, which if you’re opting for the ragu certainly means a full bodied red.

Perth - Gramercy Bar & Kitchen
A long day in the office calls for a wine and a comforting feed. Situated right in the thick of Perth CBD, Gramercy Bar and Kitchen is the perfect spot to shake off the day. As a Citi cardholder, the best place to start this process is with a free bottle of wine, and by the time your braised lamb shank in fluffy puff pastry with a side of creamy mash has arrived your concerns for the day will have completely faded away. For a classic home staple done well, opt for the bangers and mash with mustard, creamy mash and a generous topping of jus. Or, for a quintessential winter warmer, go for the chili mussels served with charred garlic bread to soak up the napolitana sauce.

Brisbane - Italian Street Kitchen Gasworks
When you’re on the hunt for comfort food you can’t go past a couple of slices of wood fired pizza and a punchy tiramisu. Set up like a street-side cafeteria, Italian Street Kitchen (ISK) is the place to go when you want to fill your boots with as much pizza and pasta as your heart desires. Following the mantra that traditional Italian food is real and humble, prepared with local produce that warms the heart and comforts the soul, ISK is where you want to hunker down this winter. Sticking to pizza classics like margherita, diavola with Calabrese spicy salami, Spanish onion, mushrooms and fresh basil and funghi with mushrooms, gorgonzola, parmesan and fresh parsley, ISK knows there’s nothing more comforting than being able to have it all.

As a Citi cardholder you’re entitled to a free bottle of wine at almost 400 restaurants across Australia, giving you even more reasons to give into your cravings this Winter.
